Passenger traffic grows 6.7% at airports in the Madeira Region

In March, 442,500 passengers passed through the region’s airports, an increase of 6.7% over the same month last year.

These travellers were carried by 2,975 aircraft, 7.1% more than in the same period last year.

Data released today by the Madeira Regional Statistics Directorate (DREM) show that Madeira airport recorded an increase in both aircraft movements (up 8.5%) to 2,808 and passenger numbers (up 7.7%) to a total of 431,800.

In contrast, Porto Santo airport recorded year-on-year declines in aircraft movements (167; -12.1% compared to the same period in 2024) and in passenger numbers (10,700; -22.0%).

In the first three months of 2025, the variations in aircraft movements and passengers were +8.8% and +6.7%, respectively.

In March 2025, each aircraft carried an average of around 154 passengers (155 in March 2024) at Madeira airport, while at Porto Santo airport the figure was around 64 passengers (72 in the same period of 2024).

In the same month, passenger traffic at the Region’s airports increased by 15.8% in international traffic (205,900) and decreased by 3.2% in the domestic segment (191,500).

At Madeira airport, international traffic (57.1%) predominated over domestic traffic (42.9% of the total). At Porto Santo airport, domestic traffic predominated (60.8% of the total), but with a greater disproportion compared to the same period in 2024 (58.6% of the total).

Aircraft occupancy stood at 86.0%, with Funchal Airport reaching 86.7% and Porto Santo 65.6%. Last year, year-on-year occupancy rates were higher, both for the two regional airports combined (87.9%), and for Madeira Airport (88.5%) and Porto Santo Airport (72.9%).

The number of passengers arriving and departing from the Region’s airports totalled 1,139,500 from January to March 2025, 43.5% of which corresponded to traffic exclusively between airports located in national territory, including domestic and internal connections, and 56.5% to international traffic. Within the latter, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for international flights from the Region’s airports (29.1%), followed by Germany (22.8%) and Poland (12.4%).
